OUR STORY

Tengeru Cultural Tourism Program started off in 1998 as informal Cultural Tourism Program for Meru’s Indigenous. It was originally named Tengeru Village Cultural Tourism Program. The idea to start Tengeru Cultural TourismProgram came about when the Founder, Mama Gladness Obed Pallangyo, initiated Environment Conservation Program through Village Environmental Conservation Initiative (VECI).

As a result of the endlessly effort of Ms. Gladness Obed Pallangyo (Executive Director) whose vision has always be, seeing environments conserved and local community make use of it to improve its wellbeing. For more than 15 years, TCTP Conducts tree planting program through which it has managed to plant thousands of both indigenous and exotic trees of different species in various areas of Arumeru District.

In Early 2004 she highly promoted the coffee Tour and being the first Cultural Tourism Program to offerthis outstanding service in Tanzania. At that time Learning African Culture Particularly Swahili language, Local traditions, customs and taboos was in a very high demand all over the UK and other Western Nations. Many students, tourists, Future Experts and Volunteers etc were looking to learn Swahili language and Culture

Therefore, in the same year 2004,Mama Gladnesswas notified by the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB) to expect the visitation of one Volunteer from the United States of America who camped at her homestay for a month. This volunteer highly learned about the Meru’s Culture and supported a number of community development Programs at Tengeru Village basically in Schools, Hospitals and Orphanages. His visitation motivated more Mama Gladness to formalize this program through legal registration and Tengeru Community approval so that it may enhance the whole Tengeru village livelihood development as well as Promoting Cultural Tourism in Tanzania. And thus, Tengeru Cultural Tourism was Born.
